The Power of His Name

It’s explicit in His name, Immanuel, that Jesus will never leave us, and that’s not just a promise proclaimed, but a long-ago promise fulfilled.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

As we read the truth of God’s story, we see the thread of His presence constantly—with the Israelites in their darkest hours, as they were slaves in Egypt, when they finally reached the promised land, and throughout the descendants of Abraham to the birth of Jesus. Jesus coming to earth as a baby was the greatest sign God could give that He would always be with us. It’s the long-awaited sign we’ve needed since the moment Adam and Eve were sent out of the garden, and the beginning of waiting for Jesus’ second arrival so we can all be at peace with God in Heaven. The birth of Jesus at the first Christmas revealed that there is deep meaning in God’s presence, and His presence never leaves us. “‘She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).” Matthew 1:21-23 (ESV) When the angel revealed the promised child to Joseph, he proclaimed that they name Him Jesus, which means “Yahweh is salvation” to fulfill the prophecy that Isaiah spoke. While Jesus and Immanuel (both names given to Jesus Christ) have different meanings, it can be understood that Jesus implies what He will do (save us) and Immanuel implies how He will do it (by our sides). Often we aren’t paying enough attention to see God’s presence with us in every moment, but that doesn’t mean He isn’t there. Jesus came to walk life with us on earth to reveal His deepest desire of presence with His people, and He didn’t leave us alone when He ascended back into Heaven. This promise of His presence brings meaning to our everyday lives, but especially in this Advent season as we reflect on the greatest gift we ever received.

How do we heal from the SBC Sexual Assult Scandal?

I want to be a part of the solution, not the cause of more injuries. As a survivor, I understand the fear of the pain when reflecting on the past. News reports of more instances of people experiencing an injustice prick wounds buried deep. It has taken me years to find the courage to speak up about the criminal acts done to me. And it has taken even longer to embrace those pain points and filter them through the blood of Jesus. I by no means am completely healed from these wounds, but I am healing. This journey will be long but worth it.
